The Spa Lifestyle
In recent years, there has been a significant surge of concern for health and fitness – people go on diets, undergo lifestyle changes, and sign up for gyms and fitness centres. The spa industry has also enjoyed this increased pursuit for health, beauty, and wellness. A majority of the reasons for going to spas have to do with de-stressing and detoxification for customers. The spa used to be a luxury available to only upper class clients, but now, even the middle working class can enjoy regular trips to the spa.
With the target market increasing, the types of spa also try to keep up with this increase. The most visited type of spa is the day spa where its services include facials, massages, waxing, manicures and pedicures. This kind of spa is often compared to beauty salons in that it is only visited for the duration of the treatment; but day spas offer more services salons cannot offer like skin exfoliation, chemical peels and body treatments. Another type of spa with increasing popularity are destination spas, which are short-term residential facilities that provide customized services for spa-goers to develop healthy habits. Customers typically stay for a week wherein they join a comprehensive program that includes spa services, exercise activities, wellness education, healthy cuisine and special interest programming. Other types of spa are medical spas, mineral springs spas, dental spas, resort/hotel spas, cruise ship or airport spas and club spas. These facilities have different services to meet the lifestyle needs of spa-goers.
Real estate developers have taken advantage of this increased public interest in spas. Properties near spa towns or spa resorts now fetch a significantly higher price on the market. Also, old inns and country homes that have a potential to be turned into spa resorts get a lot of offers to be out on market for sale. There are now a number of residential spa communities. The idea of a spa in their own neighbourhood appeals to many. The spa trend has real estate developers adding spas to various properties. The choices are varied – full ownership, fractional ownership, residence clubs, and condo hotel resorts. These properties allow the buyer to take advantage of living and investing in a healthy lifestyle community.
